It’s Time for the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) 2020 Season

The 2020 season for VJBL is upon us. With games starting on January 31, there is plenty to get excited about this year, as juniors from around Victoria join their teams, pick up a ball and play their first game, or one of many. So, let’s get into some of the key factors of this upcoming season.

Spalding’s continued commitment to Victorian basketball

Basketball Victoria and Spalding announced an exciting partnership in 2019, with Spalding becoming the official ball for the organisation and its representative leagues including the Melbourne United Victorian Junior Basketball League and Big V. The joining of the major corporations allows Victorians to play more basketball, more often.

As we enter the second year in the partnership, the team at Spalding are immensely proud of the collaboration and thrilled to be continually working with Basketball Victoria. We love nothing more than supporting the juniors and professionals of the sport and are pleased to play a significant part in the game we are all so passionate about.

VJBL Events in 2020

National Junior Classic – The most prestigious junior basketball tournament in the country. Male and female under-12s through to under-18s teams from across Australia will come together in Melbourne and compete over the Queen’s Birthday.

3x3 – Every year Melbourne United VJBL hosts a 3x3 challenge tournament for players under the age of 20. Simple and fun to play, the 3x3 format is a great way to promote the value of basketball as an activity. The tournament will take place on July 8 at the State Basketball Centre, Wantirna South.

Girls Got Game – VJBL initiated the Girls Got Game program to increase the profile of girl’s participation in Victoria and provide associations with opportunities to promote girls in Basketball Victoria. Areas of focus include female players, coaches and technical officials, and each week female players will be identified with the public able to vote from the chosen few for Player of the Week.

Participation levels

Over the past few years the number of teams playing in the VJBL has growing from 1,074 to an exciting 1,306. In addition, there is now half as many female teams playing as there are male teams. The spike in female teams is not only important and impressive but is a trend that is sure to continue as young girls are encouraged more than ever to get active through team sport and play basketball competitively.
