WNBL Period Poverty Round

For the second year, the WNBL, in conjunction with partners BOODY, Cygnett and Share the Dignity, will be delivering a league-wide round aimed at Fighting Period Poverty. This year it will be held in Round 13, which runs from Wednesday 24th January to Wednesday 31st January. The objectives of the round are to create awareness of period poverty in Australia; collect sanitary products and have them distributed to those in need; and to raise funds for Share the Dignity by promotion and sale of Bloody Good Socks.

Period poverty is defined as the lack of access to sanitary products, menstrual hygiene education, toilets, hand-washing facilities and waste management. It is an issue that greatly effects the unemployed, university and TAFE students, homeless people, those displaced due to domestic violence and the LGBTQIA+ community. According to the Big Bloody Survey conducted in 2021, one in five women have to improvise on period products, and 40% changed to a less suitable period product due to cost. 49% said they wore a tampon or pad for more than four hours because they didn’t have any more to use, 48% at least sometimes missed class due to their periods, while 65% said they at least sometimes missed sport because of their periods.

Share the Dignity is an Australian charity that was founded in 2015 and aims to end period poverty and bring dignity to women, girls and those who menstruate who are experiencing homelessness, domestic violence and period poverty through the distribution of period products.

Spalding is proud to support the WNBL, BOODY, and Share the Dignity in the continued fight against period poverty.
